The workers of health centre went on indefinite strike as a result of the ugly incident that occurred last week Monday. Some group of students out of frustration and emotional trauma mobilized themselves to show their grievances for the lost of a comrade, Ahmed olumo, who died at Bowen hospital due to an unknown ailment.
The bully-off occurred in the morning at health Centre and led to the closure of the Centre. During the protest, the DSA along the head of the unions addressed the students and pacified them.
The workers were not only embarrassed, threatened especially when they saw cane with some set of students but felt unsaved. While the students in their understanding are saying that their unprofessionalism had caused the death of the brave comrade either by referring him to Bowen hospital or administering the usual drugs and injection; paracetamol & one other.
Without being unfair, what's the offense of the workers ? Can they give what they don't have ? Is the health Centre well equipped ? I could remember some years back, one of the health Centre doctor was referred to Osogbo and later lost his life. This simply implies that they can't give what they don't have. The students show-off should have been directed to the school management, not the workers.
The ongoing closure of the health Centre is disastrous, so many lives have been affected. The patients on treatment are no longer receiving attention while students on medical clearance are forebodingly pathetic. People keep visiting the health Centre on daily basis. In fact, on Friday, a staff from the institution also came for medical check up and was surprised and disappointed.
The indefinite strike embarked upon by the workers at health Centre is as a result of the directive from JAC. The Jac had directed its members to embark on indefinite strike until there's adequate provision of security for its members. This was contained in the letter sent to the Vice chancellor notifying on indefinite strike and stating reason why its members will only resume work.
According to a source who wish to be anonymous, he quipped that; " it contravene the law for any staff to beat student while also a taboo for students to raise their hands on any staff. The penalty for this is a total dismissal, sanction, rustication or suspension. This can be found in students hand book." He said.
However, investigation further reveals that plans are currently going on to ensure that the health Centre is back on track this week. The council chairman is already aware and more concerned. This I confirmed last week Tuesday.
